    deep thoughts from anton....
Lately i have been wishing i was as into exercise/conditioning/athletics as i am now when i was back in college. I could have gotten an exercise science degree, which would relate much more to my present goal of working towards becoming some sort of personal trainer/coach.

While browsing http://aliveness101.blogspot.com/ (this guy, Matt Thorton, runs the brazillian juijitsu school i go to) i came across a quote by Joseph Cambell. He said "the only peak experiences i have realized have come as a result of athletics" Or something like that.

This is exactly how i have been feeling alot lately during wrestling. When i am in the "zone", if you will, i am not worrying about the past or the future. At the best moments i am not even worried about beating my opponent. i am just doing what my body knows how to do, attacking, defending, reacting, reversing, etc. After those practices i often feel like i worked, but also a sense of refreshment, like i could have gone forever.

The only other thing that makes me feel like this is music, during a really good session.

I think everyone needs to find what gives them that sort of feeling and just do it.

Biked to work today using my new commuter backpack.

    http://www.fatcyclist.com/2006/12/04/banjo-brothers-commuter-backpack-tres-awesome/

Its great, waterproof, and lotsa room for stuff. I would have had more room if i had put my lunch box in the bottom. I think from now on i will just get some tupperwares that i know wont open up. The lunchbox takes up a bit of extra space. I also kind of overdid it on the amount of clothes i wore to keep me warm while riding. Long john top, light shirt, light pullover, and another sweater. I was pretty warm when i got to work. I always think its colder than it really is when i get up.

    tired
I went over to the local all you can eat Indian buffet for lunch today. I always bike by it on my way to work, and it smells so good. I ended up eating to much, three plates worth, and promptly collapsed in the student lounge at work for a while, before starting my shift at 1:00. I always end up doing that at indian buffets, i shovel it in before my stomach can tell my brain its full.

Life has been going well lately. Went over to the cowboy town of Pendleton this past weekend to watch a few guys from my juijitsu school who were in an MMA tournament. Two lost by decision, one went to draw, and one guy won by submission. Two other of our guys were suppossed to fight, but one's opponent ending up breaking his foot, and the other bowed out at the weigh in after he saw our guy, who at 185lbs is a monster.

I have been biking to work a few times a week, which is an hour round trip, plus lifing weights on some of those days, as well as juijitsu about three nights a week. My conditioning and fitness is feeling pretty good, i did about 10 4 minute rounds on Sunday night and was able to keep up a good pace through all of them. It feels good to wrestle with someone much bigger and basically outwork them. I think the biking and weight lifting/conditioning on my lunch hour allows me to recover much quicker between rounds at juijitsu practice.

I actually had to turn down a music gig the other day because i have another one. The Coffee shop where i have been playing asked if i wanted to come in next weekend, but my band and i have to play a small wedding recpetion. Its nice to be gigging some, a year ago i wasnt doing any of this. The reception next weekend doesnt pay much, its a favor for a friend of the fiddler, but its the same pay as i would get at the coffee shop, plus free catered food and perhaps more tips. I can just schedule with the coffee shop for another date.

I've been biking to work and around town alot more lately. The time to work via bike and car is about the same, its colder on the bike and i dont get to listen to tunes on the way, but its good excercise kinda exhilerating hauling ass down the road. I need to get some fenders, as my ass got all wet the other day coming home. Thankfully i just bike in a crappy pair of shorts and put my work cloths in my backpack.

There are a few items i need to purchase still. I would like a big retangular commuter bag that is waterproof and can hold a decent amount of stuff. I also need a flasher for my bag and perhaps one for my helmet, all the better for motorists to see you. And perhaps eventually some sort of light rain jacket shell that i can just wear over my shirt.

Portland is one of the bike friendliest cities in the US, so i figured it was high time i took advantage of that.

    St P's Day
Its St Patricks Day. My friends and i have a music gig at this coffee shop tonight. We are actually getting paid, thought not a huge amount, woohooo. Some people who are interested in hiring us for their wedding are coming to check it out. We've only been practicing together a week, but i think we will do ok.

Well, now my commute time to work has tripled. I used to have a nice 15-20 min drive, but now its an hour via good ole public transportation. OHSU has decided to treat the new building here like the rest of the facilities, and is enforcing parking even though there are plenty of spaces and not many employees yet. And since its a five year waiting list for parking decals, and i am only a temp, that means to bad for me. Oh well, at least i can ride the Max and Streetcar, sucks even worse for the guys coming in from the suburbs.

    bathrooms at my work
Apparently the bathrooms at my work use reclaimed water to flush the toilets. Above them there is a little card that reads

"This toilet uses reclaimed water, please do not drink."

You would think most people would chose not to drink toilet water, reclaimed or not.

    its monday
Either katie and i are filthy, or the previous tenants never cleaned the house. There is dust and hair everywhere, no matter how much i clean, it seems. They had a dog, so perhaps that is the problem. Going to give the house a good cleaning this weekend, and hopefully that will help things. Perhaps i need one of those dust filters as well.

Rode our bikes around the city this weekend, very cool. its neat to ride in the bike lane and get around town nearly as fast as a car.

They are revoking our parking privileges on Wednesday at work, so its either pay $10/day, ride public transportation, or bike. I will prob do public transportation for now, and eventually bike if its not raining. I need to get some fenders if i am going to be commuting all the time.

I havnt used my journal in a while. We moved to Portland, been busy, and i guess i just havnt had much to say. However, i realize my friends may be interested in my fast paced exciting life, so i will try to post more.

Got a band together, and we have been practicing regularly. Myself on guitar/flute, this other guy on fiddle/guitar, other guy on whistle/bouzouki, his girlfriend on fiddle. Its going well, and is fun. Everyone seems to get along and we have alot of variety when it comes to instrumentation. Hopefully it will work out.

Other than that just working a contract help desk job and still trying to get settled. Playing lotsa irish music, though not going to quite as many sessions now that i have band practice once or twice a week. Not sure what i am going to do when this job ends. Going down to Eugene sometime soon, my friend is going to me how to blow glass. He does it for a living, and seems to do well. Perhaps its something that will be interesting to me... God knows programming wont work, i tried to read a book the other day and quit after an hour.

Lotsa good beer here Portland. I think my current favorite is some sort of Wheat Beer made by Weinhards i think. Lighter beer with a kind of fruity taste. Suprisingly good.

    goodbye tallahassee
Well, only a few more days and then its goodbye Tallahassee. Having been here since 1998 i am going to miss alot of people. But its for the best, i need to move somewhere that offers me more possibilities. I am going to be in Orlando till the end of July and then its off to Oregon with the new wife. We are loading the essentials in my car and having the rest of our stuff, like books and cds, shipped out later. Our plan is to drive up to Bozeman, Montana, to see Katie's aunt, and then over to Oregon.

I am excited about the whole deal and also kinda scared. We have money saved up, i just hope i can find a decent job in a reasonable amount of time. I am looking foward to some better juijitsu schools and more flourishing irish music scene.

I am going to miss all my friends here, but they can come visit, and i am sure i will be in Florida from time to time.

    ok session last night
Had an ok irish session last night. Except for this crazy guy that came in saying he was from Missouri, and kept asking us questions about our instruments. He got mad and left when we told him he couldnt smoke in the room. Then he came back so we started packing up our stuff, since it was late anyway. He got the message and got pissed and left. Musta been off his meds.

Not up to much else. my neck has been hurting for a week or two. I must cranked it in juijitsu, cause it hurts on the left and down my shoulder. Cant play flute to much because of it. It will probably go away eventually, but it would help if i would stop wrestling for a week or two. I am to stubborn, plus i get pissed and ansy if i dont excercise regularly.

Gettin married on June 18th. Woo hooo!! I am kinda nervous about the whole affair, though it will be nice to finally be with Katie.

    juijitsu tournament
So i am participating in a juijitsu tournament on may 6th, which is coincidentally my birthday. Its up in Atlanta. I have been juijitsu for a few years, its more or less like what you see on the Ultimate Fighting Championship or The Ultimate Fighter. Except i dont do the striking part, just the wrestling and submission part. Its alot of fun. This will be my first tournament, so i have been training alot. I'm kind of nervous, but it should be a good time. Alot of my teamates are going.

    job
Man, i cant wait to get out of my job when i move. The managers are shit, our CIO has done little since she got here last July. they just sit around in meetings all day and bitch about stuff but actually do nothing. I have seen little to no progress on getting our file servers, email systems, etc. Plus they wont hesitate to throw someone under the bus if need be. Fuckers. I hope they all get fired.

    French Press
So my fiancee got me a french press recently. For those of you who are not coffee drinkers, a French Press makes vastly superior coffee to a normal drip coffee maker. Basically you put some grinds in a cylinder, let it steep with hot water, and then use this filter thing to seperate the grinds from the coffee. All the oils from the beans stay in the coffee. Man, this stuff is so good. The caffine content must be much higher than drip coffee, cause after one cup i am ready to go. Its worth getting up early in the morning to make it.

So it looks like i am in a band now. I am playing guitar along with a flute player and a fiddler. I am really glad they asked me to join them, cause they are some of the best instrumentalists in town. We have a St. Patricks day gig at the local pub, so we started rehearsing for that last night. It looks like things will go well. Its nice to be playing guitar again. I mostly play flute at sessions these days.

    work sucks
Work is seriously starting to suck. My immediate boss is leaving, and our Chief of IT is an idiot. She is making managerial decisions like wanting to roll out 500 pc's by tuesday. I had to go and tell a higher up boss that that is physically impossible, even with help. We dont have the Ghost images, the switch, or the room setup. Luckily the higher up boss understood so my back is covered. Hopefully it wont all go to hell when my immediate boss leaves.

    update
I realize its been a while since i updated my journal. I have been busy at work, as well as playing lots of music and doing juijitsu. Things are going well, though my job is tiring me.

Had a good time at the irish session tonight. Flute playing is improving, and i can play along with more tunes. Its nice when me and the other flute player play together, cause he is real good. I will take the melody and he plays this cool counter melody stuff. I drank a few beers tonight which kind of hampered my playing ability in the later hours. Wish i could have played more rhythm guitar, but there is always a guitarist there, and he does not double up on a melody instrument. Kind of sucks, but i will get my time sometime. Argh. Flute is fun, though i need to get a better one sometime in the future.

Irish music is so great and really the only thing i am serious about these days. When i can confidently play a tune at a session and everyone else joins in and its just flowing it is the best thing in the world.

Tomorrow i might go test drive some cars, do juijitsu, work on a new tune i learned, and perhaps record with my friend. A busy day, but it beats sitting on my ass. If only i did not have to work.

A while ago my family and i took some pictures at home with the digital camera. Here is me and my dad during a test shot. Somehow i dont think he approves of my wackiness.

    Here is a pic.
